Peel Clear Guide

Peel Clear vs a Repaint

A fair, side-by-side look at Peel Clear, the reversible sprayed peelable system Royal Armor applies in Scottsdale, and a traditional repaint: what each does to your factory finish, and which fits your plans for the car.

Last updated: September 2026.

Peel Clear and a repaint can both change how your car looks, but one is permanent and one is not. A repaint strips or sands the surface and lays down new automotive paint that becomes the car’s finish for good. Peel Clear is a sprayed, peelable layer that sits on top of your factory paint and comes off by hand whenever you want. Royal Armor sprays Peel Clear only, so here is a straight comparison to help you choose.

What each one actually is

Peel Clear. A spray-applied peelable paint system. A waterborne base coat and a self-healing top coat are sprayed over your existing paint in a controlled booth and cure into a smooth, flexible layer that is sandable and buffable and peels off by hand with no adhesive and no residue, per Peel Clear’s published specs. It goes on clear for protection or in one of 267 colors for a reversible color change.

A repaint. A traditional refinish. Body shops prep, sand or strip the panels, then spray new base and clear coats that bond permanently and become the vehicle’s paint. Done well, it can match factory color and finish exactly and restore damaged panels.

Where a repaint is strong

We will be fair to a quality repaint. When paint is faded, damaged or you truly want a permanent new color that behaves exactly like factory paint, a proper refinish is hard to beat. A skilled body shop can match factory color, repair dents and rust, and deliver a finish that is fully integrated into the car. For collision repair or restoring an older vehicle, a repaint is often the right call.

Where Peel Clear is strong

Peel Clear solves a different problem, all per Peel Clear’s published specs:

  • Full reversibility. It peels off by hand in large sheets with no adhesive and no residue, so your factory paint is still there underneath.
  • Originality preserved. Because the original paint stays intact, you keep the car’s unmodified finish for the day you sell or want the factory look back.
  • Color change without commitment. The same system covers 267 finishes, from 165 RAL solids to 85 pearls and 17 color-shift options, in gloss, satin or matte, and you are not locked in.
  • Repairable finish. Once cured it is sandable and buffable, and a damaged area can be peeled and resprayed rather than blended.
  • Self-healing top coat. Light surface scratches fade on their own.
  • 20-year peelability warranty. Peel Clear backs the system against yellowing, peeling, cracking, fading and adhesion failure.

Which is right for you

Choose a repaint if your paint is damaged or faded, or if you want a permanent color you never plan to reverse and you accept the effect on originality. Choose Peel Clear if you want to change or protect your look while keeping the factory paint intact, and you value the option to peel back to original whenever you like. Since Royal Armor sprays Peel Clear only, we will tell you honestly whether it fits your goals before you book.
